People who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.
A couple of weeks ago CanCERN was asked to attend a mock disaster to practice how to respond in the event of a disaster. This was well organized by the CDHB and brought together a lot of very experienced people. For CanCERN it was actually a scary event as we were thrown back into our ‘post shake memories’ with an added stress of having to make responsible decisions about the community in need of leadership and action. It wasn’t easy but thank goodness for the incredible learning experiences the community gave us in September 2010 and Feb 2011.
Our simple summary of a morning of work goes as follows:
Don’t rely on IT – get out into the streets with pen and paper and collect data from the people.
Set-up obvious bases in the local communities – a place for people to go, be safe, share, support, help and connect.
Stay connected – meet with the community regularly, collect the data, “listen” to it and do something.
Maybe this is not the right time to ask, maybe there never is a right time, but if we were to have another disaster what would you do differently? How would you react as a parent or a community leader?
Kia Kaha Everyone.
